Modernism and Its Discontents
Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour; field trips, three hours. Art majors should complete courses 31A, 31B, and 31C in sequence in first year. Continued impact of modernist ideas from 1960s to present, covering shift from modernist to postmodernist practices and theories. Examination of critiques of modernism drawing from emancipatory movements and poststructuralist, feminist, queer, performance, postcolonial, and critical race theory. Letter grading.
